Long time EFV-8 Member and past trustee of the Early Ford V-8 Foundation, Don Fales of Trenton Florida
Ron Stauffer (right), is shown receiving the keys to a 1941 fire truck from Ben Weldon, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Ben bought the truck in 1991 and had it restored. This truck was contracted to the Hercules Powder Company in Radford, Virginia, where it was in service until the mid fifties. Pictured is a fire truck donated to the Early Ford V-8 Foundation by Doris Matthews. It's a beauty boys! Stored in a garage for many years the truck is in great condition. Did we mention that it's HUGE??
is seen attending the 2010 Eastern National Meet in Concord NC in the company of his son.
His attendance was remarkable in that it was in follow up to a series of recent strokes and Don's continuing need for therapy to help him walk. Don remarked, " I am getting along well and I am recovering slowly. Its been great to see some nice cars at this ENM. Its a great show but what is even greater is seeing a whole lot of nice people". Don continues his love of old Fords and told Bill Tindall he hopes he soon can get back to working on restoration of his '40 pick-up truck. Don has two other '40 Fords.
Don is a founding member Trustee of the Early Ford V-8 Foundation and served it faithfully from 1991 to 2009. It was Don who arranged storage for many of the Early Ford V-8 Foundation's collection at the Don Garlits Museum in Ocala FL until it could be moved to its permament home in Auburn IN in 2009 Don is also a member of the Suwannee River RG #140 Group of Florida.
Two Make it a Pair!
It was then sold to the Moneta, Virginia, V. F. W. for $54.00 where remained in service until May 1979. At this point it had 9,187 miles on the odometer. The truck then passed through a used car lot and was sold to a volunteer firefighter who campaigned it up and down the hills of Virginia to musters where he got "first water" every time with the Waterous 500 GPM pumps. Ben saw the truck in an Auto/Truck magazine. Returning from the 1991 Central National Meet in Bristol, Connecticut, he stopped to look at it. He went back in the fall to check it out and dicker on it. Since it wouldn't start and only blow smoke out the breather, Ben was able to buy it at a reasonable price. Of course he had to add a new garage so he had a place to work on it. He did a beautiful job and the fire truck looks and runs great. This pair beats anything. Wonderful!
